Frankfurt
A quick 24 hours was all I had in Frankfurt on my first visit.
Frankfurt, Germany was my first time in Germany and also only the third time I’d ever worked an international flight. Safe to say, the more senior flight attendants on the trip had to help me out quite a bit with what to do.
Believe it or not, the service we do on international and domestic flights are very different. Not to mention, you’re usually on much bigger aircrafts than domestic flights. My favorite difference of international and domestic flights though is the crew rest. On flights that are of a certain length, we’re given a crew rest area and time to rest.
There was one other flight attendant who also wanted to get out and explore the city whilst the rest opted to stay in their rooms in sleep.
Neither of us had been to Frankfurt before so we opted to do the most touristy thing one can do.
We headed to the historic old town of the city which is called Römerberg. This little square showcases historic looking German buildings and average dining.
We grabbed the first pretzel we could find and walked around. The pretzel was fine but to be honest the best pretzel I had was the next day in the airport that I picked up on my way to my flight back to the states.
Walking around in Frankfurt was not what I expected Germany would be like. Given, it was my first time and I only had time to visit one city, but I was surprised at how modern the city was. There was the historic area, and some older buildings that I generally associate with Europe, but most of the city showcases skyscrapers and contemporary buildings.
I’d never been to a European city that resembled my home of Chicago, so it was new for me. Frankfurt is a major financial city in both Germany and all of Europe, so walking around you see plenty of business men and women walking the streets entangled with tourists like myself.
The one item every flight attendant raves about who had been to Frankfurt is the hand cream. For some reason the hand lotion they sell over there is levels above anything in the states. (I didn’t buy any, but one of the senior flight attendants was nice enough to give me one of her extras on the way home.)
We walked along the Main River back in the direction of our hotel and stopped at a restaurant, Baseler Eck.
This place is beloved by flight attendants because it’s airline themed.
On the walls there’s stickers from just about every airline you can think of. The food is authentic German, which to me means sausage.
The absolute best apple strudel I’ve ever tried was here. I’m not usually a huge apple desert person but this was worth the exception.
